Revolutionizing Landslide Detection with the Internet of Things and Machine Learning
By : Jayshree Ghorpade-Aher & Pranav Daga Landslides, a natural phenomenon that causes significant damage in mountainous regions, pose serious risks to life, property, and the environment. Traditionally, landslide detection has faced limitations in terms of data frequency, spatial coverage, and timely warnings. However, advancements in the Internet of Things (IoT) present new opportunities for enhancing landslide detection and early warning systems. The Urgent Need for IoT in Landslide Detection Integrating IoT-enabled systems offers the advantage of real-time data collection and continuous monitoring of environmental factors associated with landslide risks. Key parameters such as soil moisture, precipitation, ground movement (via accelerometers and GNSS), tilt, vibration, and pore water pressure can be tracked continuously, providing critical information on slope instability. Compared to conventional monitoring methods, IoT allows for near real-time data acquisition—significantly ...
